🎮 Combat Fundamentals
Roll Timing
There are 13 iframes in a standard roll (Medium Load). Roll into attacks, not away — this extends the time you're invulnerable relative to the hitbox. Light Load adds 2 more iframes.
Jump Attacks
Jump + Heavy Attack (R2) deals massive poise damage. Many enemies that resist light attacks will stagger from jump attacks. Essential for Colossal weapon users.
Guard Counters
Block an enemy attack, then immediately Heavy Attack (R2). This deals enhanced poise damage and can stagger enemies quickly. Uses less stamina than rolling.
Backstabs & Parries
Walk behind enemies for backstabs (critical damage). Parrying requires a shield with Parry ash or specific parry shields (Buckler has the most frames). High risk, high reward.
Two-Handing Bonus
Two-handing a weapon multiplies your effective STR by 1.5x. At 66 STR, two-handing gives 99 effective STR — the maximum scaling benefit.
Status Effects Stack
Bleed, Frostbite, Poison, Scarlet Rot, and Sleep all have invisible buildup meters. Faster weapons apply buildup more frequently. Frostbite + Fire resets the frost meter for re-application.
🗺️ Exploration & Progression
- Follow the Guidance of Grace — golden lines from Sites of Grace point toward main bosses, but explore sideways for powerful items.
- Unlock the Map — find Map Steles (stone obelisks) in each region to reveal the full map. They're always on main roads.
- Rest at Every Site of Grace — even if you don't need it. This marks them on your map and unlocks fast travel points.
- Talk to NPCs Multiple Times — many NPCs have 3-4+ lines of dialogue. Exhaust their speech to unlock quests and items.
- Mark Your Map — use custom markers for unfinished dungeons, locked doors, or tough enemies you want to return to.
- Check for Illusory Walls — hit every suspicious dead-end wall in catacombs and legacy dungeons. They reveal hidden paths.
- Use Torrent for Traps — many floor traps (pressure plates) can be bypassed by riding Torrent and double-jumping over them.
- Golden Seeds & Sacred Tears — prioritize finding these. Seeds increase flask uses (max 14). Tears upgrade flask potency (max +12).
- Crystal Tears for Flasks — mix tears at Sites of Grace for powerful temporary buffs. Cerulean Hidden Tear + Comet Azur = boss melter.
- Don't Ignore Caves & Catacombs — they contain Smithing Stones, Talismans, and Ashes of War essential for progression.
👻 Spirit Ashes Guide
| Spirit Ash | Location | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Jellyfish | Stormhill (Roderika) | Early game tank, poison buildup |
| Lone Wolf | Church of Elleh (Ranni) | Fast attacks, splitting enemy aggro |
| Banished Knight Oleg | Fringefolk Hero's Grave | High damage, aggressive AI |
| Mimic Tear | Nokron (beat Radahn) | Duplicates your entire build — S-tier |
| Black Knife Tiche | Ringleader's Evergaol | High damage, dodges frequently |
| Dung Eater Puppet | Seluvis's quest | Tank with curse debuff |
Upgrade Priority: Focus all Grave Gloveworts on ONE spirit ash. Mimic Tear +10 is better than five different +3 ashes.
⚡ Pro Tips (Spoiler-Free)
Farming Runes Early
Best spot (early): Greyoll's Dragonbarrow — use Torrent to kill the giant sleeping dragon with bleed weapons for ~80,000 runes. Or farm the Vulgar Militia near the Bestial Sanctum.
Smithing Stones
Buy Smithing Stone [1] and [2] from the Twin Maiden Husks after giving them Bell Bearings. Bell Bearings are found in mines across the world — always clear mines fully.
Respec Your Character
After beating Rennala, you can rebirth (respec) using Larval Tears. There are ~18 Larval Tears per playthrough — experiment freely with builds.
Weapon Upgrade > Leveling
A +12 weapon at level 40 deals more damage than a +3 weapon at level 60. Prioritize finding Somber Smithing Stones for special weapons.
Co-op Level Ranges
Use the Furlcalling Finger Remedy to see summon signs. Level range is ±10 levels + 10% of your level. Weapon upgrade level also matters for matchmaking.
Don't Skip Limgrave
Even if you're eager to explore Caelid or Liurnia, fully explore Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula first. The Peninsula alone has 4 Sacred Tears and multiple Golden Seeds.
🛠️ Crafting Essentials
Buy the Crafting Kit from Kale at Church of Elleh. Essential items to craft:
- Fire Pots — reset Frostbite meter for re-application
- Sleep Pots — trivializes Godskin Duo and other multi-enemy fights
- Exalted Flesh — +20% physical damage for 30 seconds
- Preserving Boluses — cures Scarlet Rot (essential for Caelid and Lake of Rot)
- Rowa Raisins — heal Torrent (your horse) — surprisingly useful in long boss runs
