🛡️ Pre-Fight Preparation

Essential Talismans

  • Green Turtle Talisman — faster stamina recovery
  • Great-Jar's Arsenal — wear heavier armor
  • Dragoncrest Greatshield — +20% physical damage negation
  • Bull-Goat's Talisman — +33% poise (prevents stagger)

Recommended Armor

Maximize physical defense and poise. She deals mostly slash damage.

  • Bull-Goat Set — highest poise (100)
  • Lionel's Set — high defense, medium weight
  • Veteran's Set — good balance of defense and weight

Consumables

  • Boiled Crab — +20% physical defense (20%)
  • Exalted Flesh — +20% physical damage
  • Bloodboil Aromatic — +30% damage, -25% defense (high risk)
  • Flask of Wondrous Physick — Stonebarb + Thorny Cracked Tear

Weapon Requirements

  • +10 Special Weapon or +25 Normal Weapon
  • Bleed weapons strongly recommended
  • Jump attacks deal massive poise damage to her

⚔️ Phase 1 — Blade of Miquella

Malenia is fast, aggressive, and has long combos. Her sword has deceptively long range. Never get greedy — one hit at a time.

🗡️ Basic Sword Combos

  • Triple Slash: Right-to-left, left-to-right, thrust. Dodge left on first swing, then roll into her.
  • Jumping Slash: She leaps and comes down with a vertical cut. Roll sideways as she descends — the hitbox is narrow.
  • Spinning Combo: 4-5 spinning slashes. Back away. The final slash has a long recovery — punish it.
  • Running Thrust: She sprints and thrusts. Dodge sideways. Very telegraphed.

💨 Dodge & Counter Patterns

  • Her recovery after combos is longer than it looks. Wait for the sword to fully lower before attacking.
  • She is staggerable after enough poise damage. Jump attacks (R2 while jumping) build poise fastest.
  • When staggered, critical attack immediately — she recovers fast.
  • She can be backstabbed after certain moves (rare opportunity).

🌸 The Flower Bloom (Scarlet Aeonia)

At ~75% HP, she may bloom into a flower. This is NOT Phase 2 — it's a special attack.

  • She becomes a flower and explodes with Scarlet Rot after a few seconds.
  • Run away immediately when she starts the animation.
  • The explosion radius is massive — don't underestimate it.
  • After the explosion, she is vulnerable for 5+ seconds — free damage window.

🌪️ Waterfowl Dance — The Ultimate Test

This is the move that kills 90% of players. When she jumps and hovers in the air, she is about to unleash hell.

⚠️ The Three Flurries

Flurry 1 She dives down spinning — 4-5 rapid slashes. The hitbox extends far forward.

Flurry 2 She pauses briefly, then spins again — slightly shorter range but still deadly.

Flurry 3 Final lunge — one massive AoE slash that covers the entire area in front of her.

✅ How to Survive (Three Methods)

Method 1: The Run-Away Technique (Beginner-Friendly)

  1. When she jumps and hovers — immediately turn and sprint away (hold B/circle + direction).
  2. Keep sprinting for Flurry 1. It should miss entirely if you're far enough.
  3. For Flurry 2 — roll toward her as she starts spinning.
  4. For Flurry 3 — roll sideways or backward at the last moment.

This works best with Light or Medium Load. Heavy Load will get you killed.

Method 2: The Dodge-Through Technique (Advanced)

  1. Flurry 1: Dodge INTO her (toward her) as she descends. The iframes will carry you through.
  2. Flurry 2: Dodge AWAY from her (backward).
  3. Flurry 3: Dodge sideways (left or right) — never backward on the final slash.

Requires Light Load for maximum iframes. Practice on a summoned co-op host first.

Method 3: Shield + Barricade (Tank Method)

  1. Equip a 100% physical block shield with Barricade Shield Ash of War.
  2. When she jumps — immediately cast Barricade Shield.
  3. Hold block for all three flurries. Your stamina will drain but you won't die.
  4. Warning: She heals from blocked hits. This extends the fight significantly.

Only use if you cannot dodge reliably. Bring extra stamina regen items.

🦋 Phase 2 — Goddess of Rot

Triggered at ~50% HP. She explodes into a massive Scarlet Aeonia bloom. Run away immediately when the cutscene ends.

New Phase 2 Attacks

  • Scarlet Aeonia Dive: She flies up and dive-bombs with rot explosion. Dodge sideways as she descends.
  • Rot Clones: Creates 3-4 ghost clones that attack simultaneously. Roll through the real one — clones deal reduced damage.
  • Extended Combos: Phase 1 combos now end with a rot explosion. Back away at the end of every combo.
  • Floating Orbs: Summons rot orbs that track you. Run in a wide circle — they expire after 10 seconds.

Phase 2 Strategy

  • She is slightly slower in Phase 2 but hits harder.
  • Waterfowl Dance still exists and is still deadly.
  • Scarlet Rot buildup from her attacks is dangerous — bring Preserving Boluses.
  • Her flower form after Scarlet Aeonia is a massive damage window — unload everything.

🎯 Recommended Builds for Malenia

BuildWeaponKey StrategyDifficulty
Bleed Rush Rivers of Blood + Uchigatana Mimic Tear +10 duplicates bleed. White Mask + Lord of Blood's Exultation for +30% damage. Easy
Colossal Stagger Giant-Crusher or Ruins Greatsword Jump attacks build poise fast. Two jump attacks = stagger. Critical attack for massive damage. Medium
Sorcery Nuke Lusat's Staff + Comet Azur Terra Magica + Cerulean Hidden Tear + Comet Azur. Requires her to be stationary (use Mimic to tank). Medium
Faith Lightning Blasphemous Blade Taker's Flames heals you while dealing damage. Stack holy resistance for her attacks. Medium
No-Hit Solo Any fast weapon Light Load, no shield, perfect dodge timing. The ultimate challenge. Very Hard

👥 Spirit Ashes & Co-op

Mimic Tear +10 (Best)

Duplicates your entire build. If you use Rivers of Blood, your Mimic will also apply bleed. This effectively doubles your DPS and splits aggro.

Black Knife Tiche +10

High damage, high mobility. She dodges frequently and uses the Black Knife skill that reduces max HP. Excellent if your build is squishy.

Dung Eater Puppet +10

Extremely tanky. Can survive multiple Waterfowl Dances. Use him to draw aggro while you attack from behind.

Co-op Summons

Letich (NPC) is available outside the fog gate. Real players can also be summoned. Note: Co-op increases her HP pool by ~50%.
