🎮 Combat Fundamentals
Deflection Timing
Press L1/Block just before the attack lands. The timing window is generous — about 0.3 seconds. You'll hear a loud "CLANG" and see sparks when successful.
- Deflecting deals posture damage to the enemy
- Deflecting recovers your own posture slightly
- Most boss combos end with a deflectable final hit — learn the rhythm
Perilous Attacks (危)
Red kanji means unblockable. Three types, three counters:
- Thrust (突): Dodge forward → Mikiri Counter (massive posture damage)
- Sweep (下): Jump and press R1 → Jump Kick (posture damage)
- Grab (掴): Run away — cannot be countered
Posture System
Both you and enemies have posture meters. When full = stunned and vulnerable to deathblow.
- Posture recovers when holding guard
- Enemy posture recovers slower when their HP is low
- Deathblow enemies to permanently kill them (most mini-bosses)
Stealth & Deathblows
Sneak behind enemies for instant kills. Essential for mini-bosses with multiple health bars.
- Crouch (L3) to move silently
- Use walls and grass for cover
- Airborne Deathblow from above
- Wall hug and peek for stealth kills
Healing Management
Healing Gourd has limited charges. Find Gourd Seeds to upgrade.
- 9 Gourd Seeds total = 10 charges max
- Pellets heal slowly over time — use before fights
- Rice and Divine Grass are emergency heals
- Healing during boss fights creates openings — use firecrackers first
Dragonrot & Resurrection
Dying and using Resurrection spreads Dragonrot to NPCs. They become sick and cannot interact.
- Use Dragon's Blood Droplet to cure all NPCs at once
- Droplets are limited — use sparingly
- True Death (no resurrection) does NOT spread Dragonrot
- Dragonrot reduces your Unseen Aid (free revive chance)
🗺️ Exploration & Progression
- Talk to Sculptor often — he unlocks new prosthetic upgrades and hints
- Check merchant inventories — they sell key items, prosthetic materials, and Gourd Seeds
- Rest at Sculptor's Idols — respawns enemies but saves progress
- Buy Coin Purses — store sen safely. Death makes you lose 50% of carried sen
- Use Mibu Balloons — increase item drop rate, sen gain, or XP gain for 150 seconds
- Hirata Estate is optional but essential — contains 2 Prayer Beads and the Flame Vent
- Sunken Valley and Senpou Temple can be done in either order
- Don't skip mini-bosses — they drop Prayer Beads (vitality upgrades)
- Headless fights are optional — but drop Spiritfall candies (infinite buffs)
- Check for hidden paths — many walls can be broken, ceilings can be grappled

⚡ Pro Tips (Spoiler-Free)
Farming XP Late Game
Best spot: Ashina Outskirts (after castle invasion). Antechamber Idol → kill 5 enemies → rest → repeat. ~3,000 XP per minute.
Farming Sen
Best spot: Fountainhead Palace. Use Golden Vortex prosthetic + Mibu Balloon of Wealth. Each enemy drops 2-3x sen.
Skill Point Farming
Endgame Ashina Castle (burning). Run from Idol to Idol killing everything. With Bell Demon, ~5,000+ XP per run.
All Prayer Beads
There are 40 Prayer Beads total (10 vitality upgrades). 4 from main bosses, 36 from mini-bosses and hidden locations. Missable ones are in Hirata Estate (second visit) and Fountainhead Palace.
Gourd Seeds
9 seeds total = 10 gourd charges. Check every merchant, especially Memorial Mob vendors. One is hidden in Ashina Castle pond.
Lapis Lazuli
Only 6 per playthrough. Needed for final prosthetic upgrades. Sources: Fountainhead Palace (2), Demon of Hatred (1), Shura ending boss (2), carp quest (1).
